Attorney General Pam Bondi Recognizes Sunshine Week

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – In recognition of Sunshine Week, Attorney General Pam Bondi touts Florida’s broad public records laws. Florida has some of the broadest public records laws in the nation, and the Attorney General’s Office is committed to supporting and providing guidance on these important laws.

“Government must be held accountable by the people, and my office will continue to protect the public’s right to government meetings and records,” stated Attorney General Pam Bondi.

According to the Florida Supreme Court, a public record includes all materials made or received by an agency in connection with official business which are used to perpetuate, communicate or formalize knowledge. Unlike majority of states, because the public records law is a statutory and constitutional right in Florida, only the Florida Legislature can create an exemption to these laws.
The Attorney General’s Office houses the Public Records Mediation Program, which is responsible for mediating disputes over public records. The Attorney General’s Office also issues interpretations, via official opinions, on the requirements of the public records law and the government-in-the-sunshine law.
